Pseudo-Solarized Color Print
This photograph by Joseph Constantino illustrates the “Sabattier effect,” or pseudo-solarization, with its striking reversal in tones achieved through overexposure in the darkroom. This can be an unpredictable process, particularly when working with color films. Here, the reflection of the inverted tree is recast in warm pinks, greys, and coppery reds. The familiarity of the shapes mirrored in the rippling water counteracts the unnaturalness of the hues, and we find ourselves standing at the lakeside.
